Work

Molecular Genetics Research Assistant, Hawaii Intitute of Marine Biology

  • Pursuing a research project concerning the population genetics of a thermally resilient coral in Kaneohe Bay under Dr.Toonen. Experience with DNA extraction, PCR, DNA UVR Assays, RAD-seq library preparation (2BRAD, EzRAD, low-coverage whole genome sequencing), and bioinformatics (R, python). Collaborated on numerous research projects within the ToBo Lab, and the Smithsonian-Hagedon Lab concerning population genetics, field work, and quantifying coral growth rates. Performs regular maintenance on coral nursery and mesocosm environment on land, and in the ocean via freediving. Proficient in Metashape (Agisoft V.2) 3D modeling, digital data collection, and identification of Hawaiian marine invertebrates.

2021 - Present

Student Assistant, University of Hawaii, Department of Oceanography

  • Provide administrative support for the facilitation of DISCO (Dissertations Symposium in Chemical Oceanography) and PODS (Physical Oceanography Dissertation Symposium) meeting materials, including editing and compiling meeting-related documents. Assist with maintaining web pages and meeting-related databases. Conduct interviews to create outreach videos.

2024 - Present

Activities

Student Volunteer, Hadal Water Column Profiler Testing Cruises

  • Participated in 3 research cruises working with Dr. Carter. Prepared, launched, and operated a CTD for nutrient and biological activity samples aboard the UH Kilo Moana. Led a team of undergraduate students on night shift, while conducting and planning operations. Assisted researchers to prepare, launch, and recover the Hadal water column profiler. Assisted with plankton net tows, filtration, and various biological and chemical lab work.

2023 - Present

Student Volunteer, Hawaii Ocean Time Series

hahana.soest.hawaii.edu/hot/

  • Aided in launching and collecting samples from a CTD for nutrient, salinity, and oxygen measurements aboard the UH Kilo Moana. Helped to conduct plankton net tows, filter chlorophyll, and perform titrations using a Winkler oxygen titrator. Performed routine meteorological observations, and salinity sample collections.
